Sloss Furnace

I’ve been traveling for work, but it doesn’t mean I don’t get to play tourist on the weekends! I’m currently in Alabama and the scenery is pretty interesting. The road from Montgomery to Birmingham is picturesque and tree lined. Signs that we’re in the South are pretty clear, but when we visited the now closed Sloss Furnaces I was very surprised. The furnace was opened in the late 1800’s and Birmingham was called the “Pittsburgh of the South”. The post-Industrial era had opened up many opportunities in the U.S. and Alabama was no exception. Today the furnaces are closed but it’s now opened for visitors and events like off-beat bridal shoots, commercial shoots and even weddings are held here. I thought it was pretty interesting and kind of haunting. More to discover in this state during the following weeks of my stay here!

Continúo de viaje por trabajo, pero no implica que no puedo disfrutar como turista durante lo fines semana! Estoy en Alabama y el paisaje es bastante interesante. El camino desde Montgomery hasta Birmingham es pintoresco con árboles y símbolos que demarcan lo indudable del sur, pero cuando visité el Sloss Furnace me llevé una gran sorpresa. Los hornos de hierro abrieron a finales de lo 1800’s y Birmingham fue conocido como el “Pittsburgh del Sur” por la industria de hierro que vino del Norte. Están cerrados hoy día para la producción, pero se pueden visitar y se frecuentan para sesiones fotográficas de novias no-tradicionales, anuncios y hasta celebran bodas en los predios. Me lo encontré bastante interesante y un poco obscuro. Ya descubriré más sobre este estado durante las próximas semanas de mi estadía!
